Project Time: February 2026
Project Location: Lyon, France
Project Type: Outdoor night light festival and cultural tourism installation
Product Category: Giant inflatable dragon fish / illuminated inflatable lantern / outdoor festival inflatable display
Application: Lantern festival, theme park night event, cultural tourism attraction, city light show, holiday parade, outdoor photo landmark
For a large-scale night light festival in Lyon, the client wanted a dramatic overhead installation that could combine Eastern-inspired festival culture with modern inflatable engineering. The event site included open lawns, lighting installations, visitor walkways, and nighttime photography zones, so the centerpiece needed to be visually powerful, illuminated, lightweight, and safe for temporary outdoor operation.
HAFE delivered a giant inflatable dragon fish lantern installation featuring a long floating fish body, dragon-inspired facial details, layered fins, printed scale patterns, golden-red color gradients, a flowing tail, and illuminated internal lighting. Suspended above the festival route, the inflatable appeared to “swim” through the night sky, creating an immersive visual experience for visitors below.
The final installation became one of the key landmarks of the light festival. Its oversized form, glowing colors, and mythological styling helped create a strong sense of movement, celebration, and cultural storytelling.
The client needed a large inflatable lantern display that could create strong nighttime impact while remaining practical for outdoor event operation.
| Client Concern | Project Requirement |
|---|---|
| Nighttime visibility | The installation needed to glow clearly in a large outdoor festival environment |
| Cultural storytelling | The design had to combine fish, dragon, and lantern-festival visual elements |
| Overhead installation | The inflatable needed to appear floating without adding heavy structural load |
| Outdoor safety | Reliable suspension, anchoring, and weather-management planning were required |
| Photo value | Visitors needed a spectacular visual landmark for social media sharing |
| Color and lighting effect | The body, scales, fins, and face needed to look rich under night lighting |
| Fast festival setup | Installation had to fit a limited event build schedule |
| Reusability | The client wanted a display that could be reused for future light festivals and tourism events |
HAFE developed a custom giant inflatable dragon fish lantern system designed for high-impact nighttime display, cultural atmosphere, and outdoor event reliability.
HAFE created a hybrid creature that blends the symbolic body of a fish with expressive dragon details. The design included a raised head, arched brow, strong mouth shape, layered beard-like lower fins, side fins, dorsal fins, and a broad colorful tail.
This gave the inflatable more personality than a standard fish prop and helped it work as a centerpiece for a cultural light festival.
The body was finished with a red-gold gradient and repeated scale pattern, giving the fish a jewel-like appearance under night lighting. Pink, orange, gold, purple, and white tones were combined to create depth across the fins and tail.
The printed surface helped the inflatable remain detailed both in close-up visitor photos and wide-angle festival views.
To enhance the nighttime experience, HAFE designed the inflatable with integrated lighting options. Internal LED lighting and external wash lighting can be used to illuminate the body, face, fins, and tail, creating a glowing lantern effect while maintaining the soft volume of an inflatable structure.
Because the installation was displayed above a public route, HAFE used a lightweight inflatable structure with balanced hanging points, reinforced loops, safety ropes, and stable orientation planning. The goal was to create a floating visual effect while reducing the load compared with fiberglass or metal scenic props.
For open-air festival use, HAFE considered wind load, fixing points, blower placement, power access, visitor clearance, night operation, and emergency deflation planning. The inflatable can be designed as a sealed or continuous air-blown structure depending on size, display duration, and installation method.

The client reported that the dragon fish became one of the most photographed installations of the light festival. Visitors stopped along the route to take photos and videos as the glowing fish appeared to float above the illuminated landscape.
Selected client comments included:
- “The dragon fish created exactly the kind of ‘wow’ moment we wanted for the night route.”
- “The scale pattern and red-gold lighting looked beautiful in photos and videos.”
- “It felt much more dynamic than a static lantern structure. The floating effect made the whole area more immersive.”
- “The inflatable solution was easier to transport and install than a rigid scenic build of the same size.”
The project helped the client increase visitor engagement, strengthen the festival’s cultural identity, and create a reusable landmark installation for future night events.
| Structure Type | Best For | Advantages | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Giant Inflatable Dragon Fish Lantern | Lantern festivals, night parks, tourism events, cultural celebrations | Large scale, lightweight, glowing effect, fast setup, reusable, strong overhead impact | Requires power, proper rigging, and weather management |
| Traditional Metal-Frame Lantern | Long-running lantern exhibitions, fixed seasonal displays | Classic craftsmanship, strong structure, detailed lantern finish | Heavier, longer installation time, larger storage volume |
| Fiberglass Dragon/Fish Sculpture | Permanent theme park or scenic area displays | Durable hard surface, premium sculptural appearance | Heavy, costly transport, difficult overhead suspension |
| Fabric Hanging Lantern Prop | Indoor events, mall decorations, lightweight festive displays | Soft, lightweight, easy to hang | Less 3D volume and lower landmark impact |
| Projection or Light Mapping | Night shows, building façades, digital experiences | Dynamic visual effects, flexible content | Requires technical equipment and suitable surfaces; no physical photo landmark |
For this project, the client needed a huge floating centerpiece with strong night visibility, manageable logistics, and repeat-use value. Inflatable construction delivered the scale of a major scenic installation with far lower weight, faster setup, and easier storage than rigid lantern or sculpture structures.
